Dielines explained: when custom packaging needs one and when it doesn't
What a packaging dieline actually is, how to read cut lines from fold lines, and when you supply your own versus using a stock box template that's already drawn for you.
The first time a designer sends you a packaging file back with “need the dieline” in the subject line, it sounds like a request for a document you were supposed to have. It isn’t. A dieline is a drawing, and depending on which box you’re ordering, either it already exists and you just download it, or it’s a thing you have to create and take responsibility for.
That fork is the whole story. Every packaging order goes down one of two paths: the box shape is already tooled and the template is handed to you, or you’re buying printed flat sheets and the shape is yours to draw, cut, and fold. Confusing the two is the single most expensive mistake in packaging, because you find out at the wrong end of a seven-business-day turnaround.
What a dieline actually is
A dieline is a flat, two-dimensional line drawing of a three-dimensional box, unfolded. It shows every edge, flap, tab, and crease laid out on a single plane — the shape the board is cut into before anyone folds it.
It carries three kinds of information, and they’re drawn differently on purpose:
- Cut lines — solid lines. This is where the blade separates board from board. The outer silhouette of the blank plus any interior windows or thumb holes.
- Fold or score lines — dashed lines. The board isn’t cut here, it’s creased so it bends cleanly. Every panel boundary is a fold line.
- Bleed and safe area — the margin outside the cut and inside the safe zone. On packaging this runs 0.125” per side, 0.25” all around.
A dieline is a guide layer, not art. It doesn’t print. You build your artwork underneath it, then hide or delete the dieline layer before you export the file. Leaving the magenta cut lines visible in the exported PDF is a genuinely common way to receive 500 boxes with printed magenta cut lines on them.
Path one: the box shape already exists
Most of what people mean by “custom packaging” isn’t a custom shape at all. It’s a stock construction, already tooled, that you print your own artwork onto. That covers nearly everything in Boxes & Packaging:

On this path the dieline is already drawn. You download the packaging template for that product, drop your artwork into it, and send back a file that matches the template dimensions exactly. The box arrives die-cut, scored, and flat, and folds by hand with no glue and no tape.
Rule of thumb: if a stock size is within about half an inch of what your product needs, take the stock size. Building your own shape to save a quarter inch of headroom costs you the tooling, the trimming labor, and the margin for error, and it buys you almost nothing.
Path two: print and trim, where the dieline is yours
Print & Trim Boxes are the escape hatch, and they work differently. You’re not buying a box. You’re buying printed flat sheets — 14PT Uncoated or 18PT C1S, four-color on the front, optional spot UV — in six sheet sizes: 8.5” x 11”, 8.5” x 14”, 11” x 17”, 12” x 18”, 13” x 19”, and 19” x 27”.
The product description says the important part plainly: die cutting and box conversion are the customer’s responsibility on all print and trim products. You get a beautifully printed flat sheet. Turning it into a box is your job, or your local die-cutter’s.
That sounds like a downside until you need it. Print and trim is the right call when:
- Your product has odd dimensions that no stock construction fits.
- The run is short. A few dozen boxes doesn’t justify custom tooling anywhere.
- The shape is genuinely unusual — a sleeve, a tray, a display, an insert, something with a window.
- You already have die-cutting capability, a cutting machine, or a converter you work with.
- You’re prototyping. Print ten sheets, cut them by hand, hold the result, then commit.
One assembly note that saves a ruined first batch: when you fold a print and trim box, the thumb hole tab goes on the inside.
Reading a dieline without a packaging background
If a designer or converter hands you a dieline file, four things tell you almost everything:
Panel count and order. Read the blank left to right. Front, side, back, side, glue tab — that sequence tells you which panel faces the customer on the shelf.
Which flaps are dust flaps. The small flaps at the ends aren’t display surfaces. Don’t put anything you care about on them.
Where the glue tab is. It gets covered. Artwork there disappears.
Grain direction. Board folds cleanly along the grain and cracks across it. On any coated stock, a fold across the grain will show a white crack line at the crease. This is why the same artwork can look perfect on 14PT Uncoated and cracked on 18PT C1S.

Four mistakes that cost a reprint
Exporting with the dieline layer visible. Hide it. Every time.
Designing to the trim line instead of the bleed line. Packaging bleeds 0.125” per side. Art that stops at the cut line leaves white slivers on the folded edges. The print file checklist covers the fundamentals — packaging just applies them on a shape that folds.
Running critical type across a score. Panels shift a hair at the crease. Keep logos and headlines clear of every fold line.
Assuming print and trim means “we’ll cut it for you.” It doesn’t. Budget the conversion step, or order a stock construction instead.
